Bradshaw (1998) Flashcards
aim
to look at how effective cbt was in treating a woman w sz
procedure
conducted a prospective, longitudinal case study of carol over 3 years of cbt treatment and follows her progress 6 months later. carols symptoms were measured on 4 scales; 1) RFS measured psychosocial functioning 2) goal attainment scale measured goals attained during treatment 3) number of hospitalisations was measured 4) development of a therapeutic relationship was measured
carols treatment followed 3 main stages
1) stage one - development of rapport over 3 months, to help build the rapport the therapist disclosed his own problems and interests to get carol to talk about hers
carols treatment happened in three different stages
stage 1 - development of rapport - occurred over three months the therapist opened up about his own struggles and desires to get carol to open up about hers. stage 2 - understanding cbt - occurred over 2 months stress management techniques taught using the abc model helping carol to understand emotions . stage 3 - treatment - 3 phrases, phase 1 early phase- weekly activity scheduledle and stress management techniques , phase 2 middle phase - coping with social situations and fear of relapse. phase 3 - end phase - plans to maintain techniques beyond sessions with cue cards.
findings
1) at the end of the study carol reported few symptoms and little distress 2) after 1 year her RFS score was stable at 27 she scored 6 at the start 3) GAS was 19.85 pre treatment and afterwards it was 80.15 which shows treatment goals had been attained 4) hospitalisations in days (previous 3 months) went from 60 in pretest to 0
conclusion
considerable improvements in all 4 measures after a three year course therefore cbt can successfully treat sz.
:( cause and effect
case studies have occurred naturally thus there are many extraneous variables that could have influenced the behaviour and not just the clinical therapy carol is receiving. T/F cannot establish cause and effect thus reducing the internal validity of the theory
:) practical applications
in knowing that a three year old group for cbt can lead to considerable improvements in carols functioning we can apply this to treat sz. T/F improving the qol for individuals with sz as cbt can be used to treat it.
:) confidentiality
the real name of the sz patient was not revealed as the researcher used a pseudonym instead. t/f Bradshaw did not breach ethical guidelines.
:( pop validity
Bradshaw studied a 26 year old white female with the pseudonym of carol. the procedure which looked at how effective cbt was in treating sz was only completed by one patient. T/F Bradshaws sample is unrepresentative of total sz population and cannot be generalised further than a unique case
