Grounded Theory Flashcards
devised by Glaser and Strauss…
grounded theory focuses on developing a theory from research evidence.
as data is gathered…
codes and categories can be drawn out from what the researcher has seen. the researchers will begin by coding everything in some way until they begin to see patterns. as the theoretical concepts begin to become apparent these codes may become more specific but initially they are likely to be very broad.
as the researchers gather evidence…
they will “memo” their work adding comments to try and develop clarity about what the data is showing them. This can help them to identify the links between different concepts that are emerging from the data
once clear theoretical concepts have become obvious…
the researchers will start to code only the relevant data they gather and they will move to sampling to gather more evidence to support what they are already beginning to see. once a clear theoretical concept has developed the researchers can then review other literature and develop theory in more detail
:) evidence is integrated into the theory
as the theory is generated from the evidence being used this means that the theory is relevant to making a diagnosis. T/F the theory has high validity.
:( subjective analysis
the theory is based on the subjective opinion of the researcher. although evidence is used to generate the theory, the researcher selectively picks out aspects of the data to focus on and as the theory begins to emerge focuses only on the aspects of the theory they are developing. T/F the researcher is selecting information and may miss crucial information reducing the validity of the theory
:( reliability
the theory is based on the subjective opinion of the researcher. although evidence is used to generate the theory, the researcher selectively picks out aspects of the data to focus on and as the theory begins to emerge the researcher will only focus on the aspects of the theory they are developing T/F when another researcher conducts the same research or coding the data, different theoretical concepts could emerge so the findings will not be consistent.
