social explanation of sz Flashcards
social causation hypothesis
social causation hypothesis focuses on social aspects that can trigger sz. research shows a higher incidence of sz in lower social classes and in urban settings. William eaton suggested that city life is more stressful than rural life and long term exposure to such stresses may make a person more vulnerable to sz.
downward drift hypothesis
suggets that those with sz drift down to lower social classes due to the difficulties that arise from having sz such as poor educational attainments and struggling to keep a job
:) fearon et al
found that there are 4x more incidents of sz in black workers than in the white population. T/F demonstrating that the immigrant population are more at risk of developing sz
:) Harrison et al
found that schizophrenics show clustering in declining inner city areas T/F supporting the idea that schizophrenics drift downward in society due to the troubles that arise from having sz
:( kirkbride
found that rates of sz were lower for afro-carrabeans when they lived in ethnically integrated neighbourhoods. T/F suggesting that the immigrant population is not a factor in contributing to the development of sz as its not all ethnic minorities that are at a higher risk of developing the disorder.
:( reductionist
this theory only accounts for social factors, such as urban setting and social class that can influence the development of sz. it does not take into account the role of biological factors, for example the dopamine hypothesis suggests that sz is a result of excess dopamine activity in certain areas of the brain. T/F this theory is too simplistic of an explanation for sz
