Vaginal Cytology: Cell Types Flashcards
1
Q
What type of cell is this?
- Next to basement membrane
- Precursor to all vaginal epithelial cells
- Uniform, small, round, basophilic cells, little cytoplasm
- Rarely seen on smears made at any stage of the estrous cycle
- Most immature cells
A
Basal Cells
2
Q
What type of cell is this?
- Smallest epithelial cells seen in routine smears
- Large, round nucleus, uniform in size
- Seen in low numbers, only in diestrus, early proestrus, and anestrus
- Quiet times of estrous
A
Parabasal Cells
3
Q
What type of cell is this?
- Large amounts cytoplasm in relation to nucleus
- Approximately twice the size of parabasal cells
- sometimes referred to as non-cornified cells
A
Intermediate Cells
4
Q
What type of cell is this?
- These are the largest cells seen
- Nuclei
- If present are faded or pyknotic, and cell borders are angular and folded
- Lots of cytoplasm - Also known as cornified
A
Superficial Cells
5
Q
What type of cell is this?
- Associated with early proestrus
- Not considered to be a reliable indicator of stage of estrus
A
RBC
6
Q
What type of cell is this?
1. are parabasal cells that contain a neutrophil in the cytoplasm and can be seen whenever neutrophils are present
A
Metestrum Cells
7
Q
What type of cell is this?
1. Are parabasal cells that contain cytoplasmic vacuoles of unknown significance
A
Foam Cells
