Microbiology: Fungal Culture Flashcards
1
Q
What parasite is this?
- superficial mycosis
- ringworm
- must be differentiated from mite infestation or hypersensitivity reactions
A
Dermatophytes
2
Q
What type of dermatophyte is zoonotic?
A
superficial mycosis
3
Q
What type of dermatophyte is this?
- subclinical in kittens and rodents
- typical ringed lesions
- nodular or tumorous lesions
- can cause hair loss and skin irritation
A
ringworm
4
Q
What are these media or tests used for?
- Wood’s Lamp
- Direct Microscopy
- Fungal Culture
A
ID of ring worm
5
Q
What method of ringworm identification is this?
- 50% of positive cases will fluoresce
- Microsporum canis (very common) - However, if treated with topicals may get spurious fluorescence (false positive)
A
Wood’s Lamp
6
Q
What method of ringworm identification is this?
- Look at hair under microscope
- Pluck hairs, do not cut
- Skin scrape at lesion’s edge until it oozes blood
- Place drop of 20% KOH solution or lactophenol cotton blue
- Will see highly refractile arthrospores at root of hair
A
Direct Microscopy
7
Q
What method of ringworm identification is this?
- Sabourauel dextrose agar and pH indicator
- Low pH (5-6) inhibits most bacterial growth, promotes fungal growth
- Alkaline metabolites change color to red
- Colony morphology
A
Fungal Culture
