Why do we not need to do a vaginal cytology on cats?
they are reflex ovulators (after mating)
How does the feline estrous cycle compare to the canine cycle?
Estrous cycle similar to dogs but RBC not present at any stage
What stage change does not occur unless the cat is bred?
changes associated with diestrus
What is this procedure for a vaginal Cytology? (6)
A. Sterile swab moistened with sterile saline
B. Insert swab into vagina, gently rotate swab
C. Remove swab ad roll onto clean microscope slide
D. Air dry. Diff Quick or methylene blue
E. Purpose is to collect cells shed from vaginal wall and from the uterus
1. Epithelial cells, neutrophils (vagina)
2. RBC - uterus
F. Difficult to determine stage of estrous cycle on single exam. Repeat exams every few days may be necessary
