Function Tests: Endocrine Function: Adrenocortical Function Flashcards
1
Q
What bodily chemical is this?
- Affects glucose metabolism, protein and fat levels
- Inhibits synthesis of protein by liver
- Increased amino acids in the blood stream - Promotes release of fatty acids from adipose
- Increase in use of fat as a source of energy
- Decreased use of glucose as energy source - Stimulates liver to form energy from non-carb source
- Using glycogen and glucagons - Helps keep blood glucose levels within normal range between meals
A
cortisol - glucocorticoids
2
Q
Is this Cushing’s or Addison’s Disease?
- adrenohyperfunction
- Increased cortisol release
A
Cushing’s
3
Q
Is this Cushing’s or Addison’s Disease?
- adrenohypofunction
- Decreased cortisol release
A
Addison’s
4
Q
Is this Cushing’s or Addison’s Disease Symptoms?
- Hypoglycemia
- Dehydration
- decreased sodium
- decreased blood pressure
- increased skin pigmentation
- Harder to diagnose
A
Addison’s
5
Q
Is this Cushing’s or Addison’s Disease Symptoms?
- muscle/bone wasting
- increased blood glucose
- increased sodium
- water retention
- pendulous abdomen, abdominal hair loss
A
Cushing’s
6
Q
Is this Cushing’s or Addison’s Disease (Treatment/Causes)?
- Adrenal tumor
- Oversecretion of ACTH
- Iatrogenic - caused by giving too much cortisol, medicine caused
- Treatment = lysodren
A
Cushing’s
7
Q
Is this Cushing’s or Addison’s Disease (Treatment/Causes)?
- adrenal gland atrophy (immune mediated)
- exogenous steroid therapy stopping
- lysodren over usage (iatrogenic)
- Treatment: Steroids
A
Addison’s
8
Q
How does lysoden work?
A
Slowly destroys the adrenal gland
