What is the vagina?
It is a musculoskeletal-membranous tube that connects the uterus to the external genitalia
What does the superior end of the vagina surround?
The cervix
What does the inferior end of the vagina open into?
The vestibule - a depression between the labia minora
What is the vagina normally?
It is normally collapsed with the anterior and posterior walls in contact, except at the superior end where they are held apart by the cervix
What does the vagina form when it surrounds the cervix?
It forms vaginal fornices
What is a speculum?
It is used to dilate the vaginal canal - particularly during a cervical screening
What is the vagina related to posteriorly?
The base of the bladder and the urethra
what is the vagina related to medially?
The pelvic muscles, fascia and the ureters
What is the vagina related to anteriorly?
To the anal canal, rectum and rectouterine pouch
What is the vulva?
Is the external genitalia of the female
What is the vulva made up of?
External part of clitoris, labia majora and minora, various skin folds and vestibule
What is the clitoris?
Is the female Homologue of the penis
What is the clitoris made up of?
It is made up of erectile tissue and is formed of a body and glans, formed respectively from the crura of the clitoris and the bulbs of the vestibule
What is the only part of the external genitalia?
The glans clitoris, the other aspect of the clitoris sit deep within the perineum
Describe the labia minora
It bisects and envelops the clitoris, anteriorly forming the prepuce (also known as the clitoral hood), a Homologue to the foreskin of the penis
