Location And Anatomical Relationships Flashcards
Where do the two kidneys lie?
Retroperitoneally (behind the peritoneum) on the posterior body wall
What level do the kidneys sit in the body?
At the level of T12 to L3 vertebrae
What are the kidneys partially protected by?
Ribs 11 and 12
What kidney usually lies lower?
The right kidney due to the large right lobe of the liver
What are the kidney related inferiorly to?
To the diaphragm which also acts to separate them from the pleural cavities and 12th ribs
What else is the kidney related to?
The abdominal visceral, suprarenal, and adrenal glands superiorly
What is the right kidney related to?
Liver, duodenum and ascending colon anteriorly
What is the left kidney related to?
Stomach, spleen, pancreas, jejunum and descending colon
What is located on the superior aspect of each kidney?
The adrenal glands
What are adrenal glands also known as?
Suprarenal glands
What is the function of adrenal glands?
Production of the body’s chemical messengers including adrenaline and steroid hormones
What hormones are secreted from the adrenal cortex?
Cortisol - glucocorticoid, aldosterone - mineralcorticoid and sex hormones - gonadocorticoids
What hormones are secreted from the adrenal medulla?
Adrenaline (epinephrine) and noradrenaline (norepinephrine)
