What does abnormal development of the kidneys and ureters in the foetus cause?
Congenital abnormalities
What is common on one or both sides?
Bifid (double) renal pelvis and ureter
How do bifid ureters usually join?
They usually join because separate entrances to the bladder are uncommon
What is another abnormality for growing kidneys in the embryonic development?
The inferior ends fuse to form a ‘horseshoe kidney’. This U-shaped kidney lies lower than normal kidneys as its ascent in development is hindered.
What are kidney stones medically known as?
Renal calculi
What are kidney stones?
Crystal aggregations that form in the collecting ducts of the kidneys and may be deposited anywhere from the kidney to the urethra
What pain arises when kidney stones are found in the kidney?
Loin pain
What pain is presented when kidney stones are found in the ureter?
Renal colic
Where does the pain radiate from?
The loin to the groin and is associated with nausea and vomiting
What are kidney stones caused by?
Dehydration, diet and have numerous predisposing illnesses
What happens to large stones?
They are located further up the urinary tract and need to be removed or fragment to air their passing
