What is the urethra?
Is a muscular walled tube through which urine is expelled from the bladder during urination
What does the urethra transport in males?
Sperm and semen
What is the vagina and urethral opening called?
External urethral orifice
What are the components of the female perineum?
Clans clitoris, labia majors, external urethral orifice and vaginal opening
Describe the female urethra compared to the male
The urethra is short and straight in females and in males its longer and can be split into 4 parts
What are the 4 parts of the urethra in males?
Pre-prostatic (intramural), prostatic, membranous (intermediate) and penile (spongy)
Why are UTIs more common in females than males?
It’s due to the how females have a shorter urethra and its closer to the anus
What are the symptoms of a UTI?
Pain when urinating, needing to urinate more often, lower abdomen pain and changes to the urine such as blood or cloudiness
What are the potential causes of UTIs?
Sexual intercourse, being pregnant, blockages within the urinary tract such as kidney stones, not drinking enough fluids, no keeping the genital region clean and dry
