What does the penis contain?
It contains erectile tissue

It causes the erectile tissue to fill with blood and therefore result in an ‘erection’

Into the vaginal canal
What is the penis made up of?
Root, body and glans
What is the root mad up of?
Mostly made up of the. Bulb of the penis and this sits deep within the perineum
What are the types of erectile tissue found in the penis?
Corpus spongiosum and corpora cavenosa
Describe the corpus spongiosum
It is a spongy tissue - this is where the penile spongy urethra travels through
What does the sponginess of the corpus allow for?
Avoids occlusion of the urethra during an erection
What is the external genitalia of the penis?
The majority of the penis and scrotum are positioned in the perineum and sit externally. The scrotum houses the testes
What is the frenulum?
Connects the skin of the body of the penis to the glans penis
What is the foreskin or prepuce?
It is a fold of skin that covers the glans penis and can be retracted back
