Vaccinations Flashcards
What does a vaccination involve
Putting a small amount of an inactive form of a pathogen into the body
What antigens can vaccines contain
-Live pathogens with antigen is treated to make them harmless
-Harmless fragments of the pathogen antigens
-toxins produced by pathogens
-dead pathogens with antigens
How do vaccinations work
-Small amounts of dead or inactive passengers are injected into the body
-The dead pathogens are covered in antigen’s and get into your body
-Then it goes through the humoral response B-lymphosytes Activate and divide (mitosis) plasma cells produce antibodies (monoclonal) be cell differentiate in memory cells for long-term immunity
What is antibiotic resistance
-where a certain strain of bacteria can no longer be killed by antibiotic
- this is caused by doctors overprescribing antibiotics or patients not finishing their course of antibiotics
What is herd immunity
- Vaccination of a significant number of the population to make it difficult for a pathogen to spread
-high % protected from disease
