Diffusion Flashcards
What is diffusion
-The net movement of molecules or ions from an area of high concentration to low concentration until equilibrium is reached
-passive process that relies on kinetic energy
What is facilitated diffusion
-Charged ions in polar molecules do not diffuse across plasma membrane is due to hydrophobic fatty acids
-movement of these molecules rely on intrinsic proteins
-Passive
Occurs down a concentration gradient with specific proteins
What are the two intrinsic proteins in facilitated diffusion
-channel proteins
-carrier proteins
Describe channel proteins
-proteins form Water filled hydrophilic channels across the membrane
-Allow specific water-soluble ions to pass
-selective = Open for a specific ion that binds and causes a confirmational change in shape
Scribe carrier proteins
-Specific molecule binds to protein
-What is a change in shape which releases molecule inside
-cotransport = Allows more than one molecule to move
