phospholipid Bilayer And Cell Surface Membrane Components Flashcards
What are two ways proteins are embedded into the phospholipid bilayer
-Extrinsic / periphal proteins
-intrinsic / integron protein
What is a extrinsic / peripheral protein
Don’t extend completely across membrane
What is an intrinsic / integron protein
Span the entirety of the phospholipid bilayer
Channel protein
-Intrinsic
-allows water soluble ions to diffuse across
Carrier proteins
-Change shape in order to move molecules across
Describe Glyco proteins on the phospholipid bilayer
-recognition site
-carbohydrate attached to a protein
Describe glycolipid on the phospholipid bilayer
-Carbohydrate covalently bonded to phospholipid
-Act as a cell service receptor for specific chemicals
-Helps maintain stability of the membrane
Describe cholesterol on the phospholipid bilayer
-Strengthens membranes by sitting between fatty acid tails which makes the barrier more complete
-hydrophobic
-Limits movement of phospholipid
Describe the structure of the phospholipid bilayer
Each phospholipid has a hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail. The phospholipids do not lie side-by-side, but the glycerol backbone lays to one side. This allows diffusion of small nonpolar lipid soluble molecules to diffuse through.
What is the fluid mosaic model?
Mixture of components with lateral fluid movement of phospholipid, protein, glycoprotein, glycolipid, and cholesterol
