energy and ecosystems (ppr2) Flashcards
what do plants do in an ecosystem
synthesise organic compounds from atmospheric or aquatic CO2
what is a producer
photosynthetic organism which produces organic substances using light energy, water, CO2 & mineral ions
what is a consumer
an animal which gets its energy by feeding of other organisms
what is a food web
many food chains linked together
what is an ecosystem
the name given to all the abiotic and biotic things found in a particular area
what is interdependance
plants and animals depend on each other
name 3 abiotic factors
temp, water, daylight
how do you calculate % energy transfer
energy available after transfer/energy available before transfer (answer x 100)
what is gross primary production (GPP)
the chemical energy stored in plant biomass, in a given area/volume
what is net primary production (NPP)
the chemical energy store in plant biomass after respiration losses to the environment have been taken into account
how do you calculate NPP
GPP - respiration losses
how do you calculate the net production of consumers
(chemical energy in ingested food) - (energy lost in faeces/urine + respiratory loss)
