Urinary System Flashcards
Kidneys Capsule
Protective layer, can be easily peeled away
Kidneys Pelvis
Urine formed by the nephrons drains into the pelvis and out via ureter
The cortex
Contains the renal corpuscles (bowmans capsule) and convoluted tubules of the nephrons
Medulla
Triangular shaped pyranmids containing the collecting ducts and between them tissue containing loops of henle
Renal Blood supply
The renal arteries supply the kidneys and blood leaves through renal vein
Glomerulus (Bowman’s capsule)
Capsule surrounding a network of cappilaries
-High pressure within the capsules forces fluid and smaller molecules out of blood through pores
-Known as ultrafiltration
Proximal Convulated Tubule
-Reabsorption of water and sodium and secretion starts
-Reabsorption of glucose
Loop of Henle
-Urine concentration starts here
-Descending is permeable to water
-Ascending is permeable to sodium
Distal Convoluted Tubule
-Last reabsorption of sodium and water
-Secretion of potassium into the urine
Collecting duct
-Excretion of urea, creatine, Na and excess water
Ureters
Carries urine from kidneys to bladder, lined with transitional epithelium
Bladder
Lined with transitional epithelium, sphincters control movement of next structure
Urethra
Passes urine form bladder out of body
