The Eyes Flashcards
Binocular Vision
Eyes point forward, wide area of view or 3D vision
Conjunctiva
Thin layer of epithelial tissue overlying the cornea and inside of eyelid
Cillia
Eyelash
Canthi
Corners of the eye where upper and lower eyelids meet
Lacrimal
Lies dorsolateral surface of the eye under upper eyelid. Secretes tears washing the surface of the eye, tears drain into nasolacrimal duct in nose
Meibomian
Diffuse tissue lying under the eyelids and contributes ti tears
Harderian
Lies under the third eyelid and contributes to secretion of tears
Aqueous humour
Provides nutrition to the corneal cells
Vitreous humour
Caudal to the lens, provides the eye with shapes and provides nutrients to cells
Sclera
Forms the fibrous white layer- ‘white of the eye’
Retina
The film of the eye
Ciliary body
Thickened structure projecting towards centre of the eye. Contains smooth muscle fibres
Iris
Contract to dilate the pupil or constrict.
Tapetum Lucidum
Light reflecting cells/ reflects light back to the photoreceptors
Nictitating membrane
A thin membrane found in vertrebrate in inner angle or beneath the lower lid of the eye
Corneal reflex
Closing of eyelids when cornea is touched
Uvea- Choroid
Darkly pigmented layer to prevent light escaping
Formation of an image
- Light rays pass through cornea
- Light rays pass through pupil
3.light hits the lens and is reflected onto retina
4.light hits photoreceptors
5.information carried to the brain is interpreted as an image
6.the image formed on the retina is inverted but the brain processes the information the right way up
