Tissues Flashcards
Epithelial Tissue
-Sheet of cells that cover and line other tissues.
-Each epithelial cells contains an apical surface and basal surface.
Apical Surface
faces the outside of structure
Basal Surface
Faces the base layer
Tight Junctions
-Fusion of layers, no leaks!
-Urinary bladder, digestive tract
Desmosomes
-Mechanical interlocking, repeated tension, stretching
-skin, heart, uterus
Gap Junctions
-Tubular proteins connect to allow exchange
-Intestinal epithelial cells, heart and smooth muscle
Stratified epithelial tissue
mulitple layers
Simple epithelial tissue
One layer
Simple Squamous Epithelium
Found lining surfaces involved in the passage of either gas or liquid
Simple Cuboidal Eipithelium
-Occurs in areas of the body where secretion and absorption take place
-Lining the renal tubules, kidney
Simple Columnar Epithelium
- Found in many excretory ducts as well as in the digestive tract
Simple Squamous Epithelium
Occurs in areas of the body subject to mechanical & chemical stresses
Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium
Found primarily along large excretory ducts
Stratified Columnar Epithelium
-Found only in select parts of the respiratory, digestive, reproductive systems & along some excretory ducts
Transitional Epithelium
- Stratified epithelium with a basal layer of cuboidal or columnar cells.
-Found in areas of body required to expand and contract
Exocrine
Discharge secretions via ducts directy into local areas
Endocrine
Glands that do not have ducts and secretions distrubuted throughout body
-Produce and secrete hormones into blood stream
Goblet Cell
Found among columnar cells of the respiratory and digestive tracts and conjuctiva of eye
Ground substance
-Cells exchange nutrients and waste with the bloodstream
-Serves as an effective obstacle for invading miicrooganisms
Protein Fibres
-Collagen
-Elastin
Cells (in connective tissue)§
-Fixed Cells: invloved in production and maintenance of the matrix
-Transient Cells: involved in the repair and protection of tissues
Loose connective tissue:
-Areolar
-Adipose
Dense connective tissue:
-Dense regular
-Dense irregular
-Elastic
Areolar (loose) connective tissue
Surrounds every organ, connects skin to muscle, envelopes blood vessels, nerves, and lymph nodes
Adipose (loose) connective tissue
Acts as an energy storehouse and a thermal insulator
Dense Regular Connective Tissue
Composed of tightly packed, parallel collagen fibres
Tendons
Attatch bone to muscle
Ligaments
Attach bone to bone
Dense Irregular Connective tissue
Found in the dermis of the skin s and in the fibrous coverings of many organs
Dense Elastic Connective Tissue
-Found in spaces between vertebrae and in areas of the body that require stretching
-Walls of artery, stomach, bronchi, bladder
Specialised Connective Tissue
->Cartilage
- Hyaline cartilage
-Elastic cartilage
-Fibrocartilage
-> Bone
-> Blood
Hyaline Cartilage
Most common type, found inbetween joints.
Elastic Cartilage
Higher levels of elsatin, found in larync and pinna
Fibrocartilage
Found in-between vertebrae
Demosome junction
junction between epitheilial cells that allows tissues to stretch
