Lymphatic System Flashcards
What is lymph?
Similar to plasma but without larger plasma protiens, formed from fluid leaked from capillaries
Lymphatic Capillaries
Excess fluid is collected the interstitial space by small lymphatic vessels
Lymphatic Vessels
-Lymphatic capillaries then form larger vessels that have a similar structure to veins
-They gave small valves
-Lymph flow is passive
Lymphatic Nodes
-Nodules of lymph tissue
-Lymph nodes mature lymphocytes
Lymphatic Ducts
- Lymphatic vessels then enter a larger lymphatic duct
Right lymphatic duct - drains lymph from the right side of the head, neck, thorax snd right forelimb
Tracheal Ducts- drain lymph from the left side of the head and neck
Thoracic Duct- collects lymph from rest of body
Lymphatic Tissue
Includes larger tissues known as:
-Spleen
-Thymus
-Tonsils
Spleen
-Stores new blood cells erythrocytes
-Destroys worn out red blood cells
Thymus
-Important in young animals
-Located in cranial thorax
Tonsils
-First line of defence against microoganisms that enter the mouth physical barrier
The immune system
The body has 3 layers of immunity:
Physical barriers-Integument, tear production etc
Innate immunity- Immediate WBC response
Acquired Immunity- antibodies + cell mediated immune response
Innate WBCS
-Neutrophils
-Monocytes
-Eosinophils
-Basophils
B lymphocytes
-Produce antibodies
-Produced by stem cells in bone marrow and matured there
