Urinary Sediment Analysis Flashcards
What does a urinary sediment analysis detect?
Abnormalities not seen on gross kr biochemical analysis
When is a urinary sediment analysis preformed?
To confirm results of biochemical analysi
What do rbc mean in a urimary sedniment analysis?
Indicate bleeding from somewhere in urinary tract
What are three things that can cause RBC in blood?
Bacterial UTI, urolithiasis, interstitial cystitis
What does it mean if the RBC are intact in a sedimentation?
That the bleeding is in urinary system
What does it mean if there is hemoglobin in the sedimentation?
There is systemic problems
What do white blood cells mean in a sedimentation?
Indicate inflammation of urimary tract
What are three things that white blood cells in a sedimentation can mean?
Bacterial UTI, urolithiasis, neoplasia
Where are squamous cells found?
Distal urethra, vulva, vagina, prepuce
Where are transitional cells found?
Renal pelvis, ureter, urinary bladder, proximal urethra
Where are renal tubular cells found?
In the renal tubule
What are casts?
Cylindrical structures made of precipitated protien that assume the shape of the renal tubule lumen where they form
What can casts be indicative of?
Renal disease
What are hyaline casts?
Precipitated protien, 0-2 is normal
What are cellular casts?
Incorporation of red and white blood cells with renal tubular epithelial cells in protien
What do cellular casts indicate?
Inflammation of renal tubule
What do granular, fatty, and waxy casts indicate?
Represent different stages of degeneration of a cellular cast
When do crystals form?
When the constituent minerals are present in the urine
What does the form of a crystal depend on?
Concentration of the constituent minerals
Ph
Temperature
What is the most common bacteria found?
G- rods
Should you worry about yeast? Why?
No because animals don’t get yeast infections so it’s a contaminate
What is the most common bacteria on the skin?
Cocci
What are six misc things you can see in a sedimentation?
Mucus threads, sperm, fat droplets, plant fiber/pollen, starch granules, parasite eggs
