Regularly occurring periods during which the female is sexually active and receptive separated by periods where there is no sexual activity

Estrogen
What are two symptoms of proestrus?
Bloody discharge, firm/swollen vulva
How will both genders react during proestrus?
Males will be attracted
Female won’t accept

What will happen with the hormones during estrus?
LUteinizing hormone will surge causing an increase is progesterone and decrease in estrogen
What is a side effect of estrus?
Swollen vulva, light pink or no discharge
How will the genders react during estrous?
Male will be attracted
Female will accept male
How long does diestrus last?
2 months
What is going on with the hormones during diestrus?
High progesterone
What will both genders do during diestrous?
Female refuses male
How long does Anestrus last?
2-10 months
What’s going on with the hormones during Anestrus?
Low progesterone and low estrogen
Will you see any symptoms with Anestrus?
No
What cells will you see in proestrus? 3
Para basal and intermediate cells in early estrus
Superficial/cornfield cells in last estrus
Some neutrophils and RBC
What cells will you see in estrus? 2
> 90% superficial/corniced cells
No neutrophils
Decreasing RBC
What cells will you see in diestrus? 3
Increasings parabas and intermediate cells
Decreasing superficial cells
Some neutrophils
What will the cells look like in Anestrus?
Few parabas all and intermediate cells
+/- neutrophils
Why would you do a serum progesterone assay?
Because serum progesterone levels will rise 2-3 days before ovulation
If ovulation is on two days, what would the serum progesterone assay results show?
1-1.9ng/ml
If ovulation is in one day, what will the serum progesterone assay show?
2-3.9 mg/ml
If ovulation is the same day, what will serum progesterone assay show?
4-10 ng/ml
