Blood Chem Pancreatic Diseases Flashcards
What are three enzymes produced by the pancrease?
Amylase (starches and carbs), lipase (fats), trypsin (protien)
What does the pancrease deal with?
Digestion of food (exocrine) and regulation of glucose (endocrine)
Define exocrine
Uses ducts to deliver stuff
Define endocrine
Dumps things into the circulatory system
What will happen if there’s inflammation in the pancrease?
The pancrease will begin to autolyse
What animals tend to get pancreatitis?
Over weight animals
What is the treatment for pancreatitis?
Flush everything out, and no food by mouth
Where is amylase and lipase normally found?
Primarily in pancrease but also in other parts of the GI tract
What are increased levels of amylase and lipase mean?
Injury to pancreatic cells
When are increased levels considered significant?
When they are 3 times the normal
What is pancreatic lipase immuno reactivity?
A highly specific test for pancreatitis in both dogs and cats
What is PLI also used for?
To diagnose exocrine pancreatic insufficiency
What cause cause an increase in trypsin?
Pancreatitis
What can cause a decrease in trypsin?
Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency
What does the blood glucose level reflect?
An equilibrium between the amount of glucose entering and leaving the blood stream
