what is urethritis?
inflammation of the urethra
what causes urethritis?
Chlamydia
Non specific urethritis
Gonorrhoea- Gram negative intracellular diplococci
how does non gonococcal urethritis present?
-scant and milky/clear discharge
-may not have dysuria
-no systemic symptoms
lasts 7-12 days
what tests are done for urethritis?
-Clinical exam
-Urethral swab for gram stain and microscopy
-Urethral swab for gonorrheoa culture and sensitivities
-First void urine, rectal and throat swabs for chalmydia and gonorrhoea NAAT
-Take blood for syphilis and HIV
how is urethritis diagnosed using microscopy?
There must be symptoms of urethritis, gram stain of urethral smear and 5 or more polymorphs (PMNLd)/ high powered field
what is seen on microscopy if it is gonococcal urethritis?
Gam negative intracellular diplococci
what is seen on microscopy if it is non gonococcal/ specific urethritis?
No gram negative intracellular diplococci
