Epithelial Ovarian Tumours Flashcards
examples of epithelial ovarian tumours?
-Serous
-Clear cell
-Mucinous
-Endometrioid
-Brennar
-Undifferentiated carcinoma
Describe a benign epithelial ovarian tumour?
-no cytology abnormalities
-no proliferation
-no stromal invasion
describe a borderline epithelial ovarian tumour?
-cytology abnormalities
-proliferation
-no stromal invasion
describe a malignant epithelial ovarian tumour?
-stromal invasion
how do borderline epithelial tumours spread?
spread on the surface like implants but do not invade deeply like other cancers
-unlikely to spread
-growth more controlled and so better prognosis
what is a serous carcinoma of the ovaries?
Malignant type of ovarian epithelial cancer
what is the precursor lesion for a high grade serous carcinoma?
Serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC)
what is the precursor lesion for a low grade serous carcinoma?
Serous borderline tumour
where are high grade serous carcinomas usually found?
often tubal
what diseases are clear cell carcinomas and endometriod carcinomas commonly associated with?
-Endometriosis of ovaries (mainly endometriod)
-Lynch Syndrome (mainly clear cell carcinoma)
are clear cell carcinomas and endometriod carcinomas benign or malignant?
malignant
What is a brenner tumour?
-a tumour of transitional type epithelium
-usually it is benign (borderline and malignant variants are very rare)
are mucinous tumours usually malignant?
no- 75% are benign
