what is trichomoniasis?
-a type of parasite that lives in the male/female urethra or female vagina spread through sex
-is a protozoan (single celled organism with flagella)
how many flagella does trichomoniasis parasite have and what are they used for?
-it has 4 at the front and one at the back
-used for movement, to attach to tissue and damage
what does trichomoniasis increase risk of?
-Contracting HIV (by damaging the vaginal mucosa)
-BV
-PID
-Cervical cancer
-Pregnancy related complications (such as preterm delivery)
presentation of trichomoniasis?
50% asymptomatic
-Vaginal discharge (frothy, green/yellow, may smell fishy)
-Vaginal itchyness
-Dysuria
-Dyspareunia
-Balanitis (inflammation of glans of penis)
-STRAWBERRY CERVIX (lots of little haemorrhages on cervix)
Investigations of Trichomianisis?
Vaginal pH >4.5 (just like in BV)
Confirmed using charcoal swab with microscopy
Women= High vaginal swab (behind the posterior fornix) and if taken themselves may use a low vaginal swab
Men= urethral swab or first catch urine
treatment for trichomiasis?
Metranidazole
