Q

Explain why globally urban residents in HICs produce more waste than rural inhabitants in LICS

A

HICS have access to more resources

They are often more developed and therefore have more resources to begin with to then waste

Products are not of as much value

LICS are less developed so do not use resources which can be wasted eg food

Q

How do countries of diff incomes generate diff amounts of waste

A

Lower income- least waste- things are more valuable

High income- more waste

Low middle income (eg China) most waste- waste is probably why they are not high income

Q

Examples of biodegradable waste

A

Food and kitchen waste

Green waste

Newspapers

17
Q

Eg of recyclable materials

A
Paper
Cardboard
Glass
Bottles
Tin cans
Aluminium cans
Metals
Plastics
Clothes
Tyres
18
Q

Eg of Inert waste( will not decompose)

A

Waste clothing, drink cartons, plastic toys

19
Q

Eg of electronic waste

A

Electrical appliances

Lightbulbs

Phones

20
Q

Eg of Opposite waste (waste containing diff materials)

A

Construction and demolition waste

21
Q

Eg of hazardous waste

A

Most paints

Chemicals

Tyres

Batteries

Pesticides

Herbicides

Fungicides

22
Q

Eg of Biomedical waste

A

Expired medical drugs

23
Q

What waste is more common in HIC

A

Food and electrical

24
Q

What are waste streams

A

Journey of waste from its source (domestic commercial or industrial) to its disposal

Eg recycling burial etc

25
Name 9 waste streams
Recycling Reusing Reduction Recovery Incineration Submergence Trade in waste Randomly dumped Burial
26
What is recycling
Reusing materials by breaking them down and reproducing something
27
What is reusing
Using something again without breaking it down
28
What is reduction
Using less of materials eg companies using minimal packaging
29
What is recovery
Extraction of materials for a specific next use Eg recycling Compost Energy regeneration
30
What is incineration
Burning waste materials- can generate electricity
31
What is submergence
Dumping waste in the ocean
32
What is trade in waste
Trading waste eg to firms to make goods
33
What is randomly dumped
Illegal dumping
34
What is burial
Landfill
35
Which is most sustainable waste stream
Reducing
36
Which is least sustainable waste streams
Randomly dumped Burial
