This is the migration of people from the inner city to the outskirts of cities
Social effects of suburbanisation
Social segregation
Improved services due to local tax base increasing
Commuter stress due to increased traffic
Employment and wealth due to new retail businesses in suburbs
BUT loss of jobs in CBS etc
Traditional close knit community living is more difficult to achieve in low density suburbs in which people live a more isolated life
Economic effects of suburbanisation
Affluent families migrate to suburbs
Local tax based increases
Decentralisation
Employment and wealth in outer urban places
Urban decline in CBD and inner urban places
Environmental effects of suburbanisation
Suburbs are developed on ‘greenfield sites’ this leads to air noise and visual pollution
Increased levels of traffic congestion and pollution led to problems for people on commuting routes
New retail and business parks follow the population
Pollution and damage biodiversity etc
Leafy green suburbs
