Urban Climate Case Study- Air Polltion In London Flashcards
What is the issue
Thousands more children and young people are at risk from toxic air then previously thought
It’s an environmental challenge and a public health challenge but no one talks about it. It’s a social injustice
If you’re a poor Londoner you’re more likely to breathe and suffer from the illegal air
Traffic is a major contributed to air pollution and there if growing concerns about emissions from diesel vehicles- NOx
What is the evidence
Tens of thousands of children at more than 800 schools, nurseries and colleges in London are being exposed to illegal levels of air pollution that risk causing lifelong health problems the Guardian can disclose
1/4 education institutions in the capital at which pupils as young as 3 are being exposed to levels of NOx that break EU legal limits
Nearly double number of education institutions than previously highlighted are affected by illegal levels of toxic in the air
Air pollution causes up to 50,000 early deaths
9000 in the capital
And costs the country 27.5 billion each year according to the government
What are the possible solutions
Khan called for the gov to introduce a new clear air act and for a diesel scrappage scheme to take polluting cars of the road quickly
Khan hopes the introduction of what he says is the world’s first ultra low emission zone will be cut toxic NOx emissions from diesel vehicles by 50%
He plans to extend the zone to the north and south circular road in the capital and has brought its introduction forward a year to 2019
Drivers on older more polluting cars will have to pay £10 charge to drive in central London from Oct
What is the Greater London low emissions charge
Traffic pollution charge scheme with the aim of reducing the emissions of diesel commercial vehicles in London
Only vehicles that do not conform to the higher emissions standards are charged
Covers most of Greater London and operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year
It was introduced in 2008
What are the central London Congestion charge and T charge
An £11.5 daily charge for driving a vehicle within the charging zone between 7-6 Mon-Fri
The T Charge (officially knows as the emissions sub-charge) operates in the Congestion Charge zone for the same time period as the CL2
It means that older vehicles driving in central London now need to meet minimum Euro emission standards or pagan extra daily charge of £10
What is the London ultra low emission zone?
An area with its which all cars cans minibuses, large vehicles etc will need to meet exhaust emission standards or pay a daily charge to travel
It will operate 247 within the same area as the current congestion charging zone comes into force April 2019
The standards are in addition to the Congestion Charge and the low emission Zone requirements
