Unity 2.3 Flashcards
Human Population Growth
What is population growth rate?
The change of the size of a specific population over a period of time.
What is the purpose of an age structure graph?
The purpose of an age structure graph is to show the distribution of a population between age groups of sex.
If an age structure graph has a small young population (base), what is happening to the population?
The population is shrinking, as there are more elderly than there are young, and the population will therefore have a lower birth rate than death rate.
A population will grow if there are ___ females at reproductive age.
more
Stage ___ of demographic transition has a declining death rate, while the birth rate stays high.
Stage 2 - Early Industrial
What are some concerns regarding population growth?
Increased:
- extraction of resources
- burning of fossil fuels
- freshwater use
- destruction of habitats
- fishing and hunting
- spread of disease and invasive species
Decreased:
- available land
A population with a rapidly growing population will have a larger ___ population than an ___ population.
… a larger young population than an old population.
A developed country will have ___ when compared to a developing country.
high life expectancy, more wealth, higher C02 emissions
What is demographic transition?
Demographic transition is slow shift in a population from high birth and death rate to a low birth and death rate.
Life expectancy is greatest in ___ populations.
developed
