Unit 11.1 Flashcards
What is a genotype?
the genetic code within a person
What is a phenotype? What determines phenotypes?
the physical traits of a person - genotype determines phenotype
What is a punnett square used for?
determining the possible genotypes and phenotypes of two parents’ offspring
What are homologous alleles?
having two alleles of the same trait
What are heterozygous alleles?
having two alleles of different traits
What are dominant alleles?
show their trait regardless of what allele they are paired to - TT, Tt
What are recessive alleles?
show their trait only if paired with the same recessive allele - tt
What is codominance?
when a pair of heterozygous alleles where the phenotypes of both alleles are shown (or combined)
What is the genotypic ratio of a punnett square?
the ratio of the possible genotypes from a punnett square
What is the phenotypic ratio of a punnett square?
the ratio of possible phenotypes from a pennett square
