Unit 10.1 Flashcards
What is the order of stages in the cell cycle?
Gap 1 > Synthesis > Gap 2 > Mitosis
What other stage is there? What happens in it?
Gap 0 - at the end of G1, the cell differentiates and leaves the cell cycle
What happens in Gap 1?
the cell grows and prepares to replicate its DNA
What requirements much be reached in Gap 1 before the cell moves on?
there must be no DNA damage, as well as sufficient resources
What happens in Synthesis?
the cell replicates its DNA, leaving it with two sets of chromosomes
What requirements much be reached in Synthesis before the cell moves on?
there must be no errors during DNA replication
What happens in Gap 2?
the cell grows more and prepares for cell division
What requirements much be reached in Gap 2 before the cell moves on?
there must be no DNA damage, complete chromosome sets, and enough cell components
What happens during Mitosis?
the cell divides into to daughter cells
What requirements much be reached in Mitosis before the cell moves on?
all sister chromatids must be attached to the mitotic spindle
What three things can happen to a cell?
divide (continue in the cell cycle)
differentiate (leave the cycle)
death (the cell dies)
What controls the progression of a cell through the cell cycle?
cell cycle regulator proteins
What do stimulating proteins do?
help progress the cell through the cell cycle
What do inhibiting proteins do?
slow down or stop the cell if something is wrong
