Unit 1.2 Flashcards
Metric System, Standard Deviation, Graphing
What is the prefix for a unit measuring a thousandth of its base unit?
milli-
The prefix kilo- is ___ times its base unit.
1,000 times
What is the purpose of standard deviation?
to help find outliers
In standard deviation, the larger the result the ___ the values are.
more spread out
What is the equation for standard deviation?
sqrt ( ( each value - mean of values ) ^2 / (number of values) )
While graphing, which variable goes on which axis?
independent - x
dependent - y
T / F : You should connect the dots on your graphs every time.
False - only connect the dots of your graph if told so
Which type of graph has one variable increasing, while the other decreases?
Indirect
How should a graph be set up?
The scale should fit each variable and use most of available space.
The title of the graph should be at the top
T / F : Different colors should be used when plotting multiple sets of data on the same graph.
True - the colors differentiate the different sets of data, making the graph easier to read.
What is the difference between mass and volume?
Mass measures the amount of matter something contains, while volume measures how much space in takes up.
What does a scale, graduated cylinder, and thermometer measure? What units do they each measure with?
Scale - mass (grams)
Graduated Cylinder - volume (milliliters)
Thermometer - temperature (degrees celcius)
How do you calculate mean?
Add up all data points and divide by the number of data points.
How do you calculate median?
Order data points in order from smallest to largest and find the center point. If there is no specific center point, average the two closest.
