Unit 9.2 Flashcards
What is diffusion? Does it use energy (ATP)?
movement of molecules from higher concentration to lower concentration - uses no energy
What is simple diffusion?
movement of smaller, nonpolar molecules through the cell membrane
What is facilitated diffusion?
movement of larger, usually charged molecules across the membrane through the use of specialized proteins
What is osmosis? Does it use energy (ATP)?
movement of water from a lower concentration of solutes to a higher concentration of solutes - uses no energy
What does hypertonic mean?
higher solute concentration than another solution
What does isotonic mean?
the same solute concentration as another solution
What does hypotonic mean?
lower solute concentration than another solution
What is active transport? Does it use energy (ATP)?
movement of molecules against the concentration gradient (lower concentration to higher concentration) - uses energy
What is endocytosis?
the process of substances being moved into a cell by forming a vesicle around them
What is exocytosis?
the process of substances being moved out of a cell by forming a vesicle around them
