Unit 10.2 Flashcards
What is the first stage of mitosis? What happens in it?
prophase - the chromosomes of the cell condense as the nucleas breaks down and the mitotic spindles begin to form
What is the second stage of mitosis? What happens in it?
metaphase - the chromosomes align along the ‘equator’ of the cell and the spindles attach to them
What is the third stage of mitosis? What happens in it?
anaphase - the spindles separate the chromosomes that were duplicated in synthesis
What is the fourth stage of mitosis? What happens in it?
telophase - the spindles bring the chromosomes to opposite ends of the cell, where they condense and nuclei begin to form and the spindles break down
What is the fifth stage of mitosis? What happens in it?
cytokinesis - the cell begins to separate into two separate sister cells as the nuclei are now fully developed and the spindles are fully broken down
What does multipotent mean?
a stem cell that can differentiate into multiple different kinds of specialized cells, but not all
What does pluripotent mean?
a steam cell that can differentiate into any kind of specialized cells in the body
What does induced pluripotent mean?
cells that were ‘reprogrammed’ to be pluripotent
Why are specialized cells different from each other?
different specialized cells express different sets of genes, which cause them to be different from each other
How do the daughter cells compare to the parent cell in mitosis?
they are identical
