Unit 7.3 Flashcards
What is metabolism?
all chemical reactions of life
What is an anabolic reaction?
a reaction that makes larger molecules out of smaller ones
What is a catabolic reaction?
a reaction that breaks down larger molecules into smaller ones
What is an exergonic reaction?
a reaction that releases more energy than it requires
What is an endergonic reaction?
a reaction that requires more energy than it releases
What is synthesis?
combing parts to create a new whole
Describe the ATP cycle.
ATP is split into ADP and a phosphate group, “emptying the battery.” A phosphate group then reattaches to the ADP, causing it to turn back into ATP, “charging the battery.”
What part of the ATP cycle is endergonic / anabolic?
The part of the ATP cycle where the phosphate group is attached to ADP to create ATP is an anabolic / endergonic reaction.
What is hydrolysis?
breaks bonds to create smaller parts
What part of the ATP cycle is exergonic / catabolic?
The part of the ATP cycle where the ATP separates into ADP and a phosphate group is a catabolic / exergonic reaction.
