Unit 4.1 Flashcards
What is the total mass of living organisms in a given area or ecosystem?
biomass
Efficiency is…
how effectively an organism uses energy / resources.
Productivity is…
the rate of the production of biomass.
Photosynthesis is when…
light is converted into chemical energy.
In respiration, energy is produced from…
glucose and oxygen.
What differs between energy, biomass, and number pyramids?
Energy pyramids compares the amount of energy passing through each level.
Biomass pyramids compare the amount of mass of each level.
Number pyramids compare the amount of organisms at each level.
(All organisms / Only plants) perform photosynthesis.
Only plants
What does increased solar energy do to biomass and productivity in an eco system? Why?
Solar energy increases biomass and productivity because it allows more photosynthesis to happen, adding more energy into the ecosystem, making more biomass at a faster rate.
Why is there more energy at lower levels of an energy pyramid compared to higher ones?
~10% of energy is lost with each layer, so as you move up the levels of the pyramid, there will be more energy lost, and therefore less organisms.
How is energy lost between levels?
Energy is lost by heat, or daily living. This includes respiration and waste from the organisms.
