What are composés et groupes syntaxiques?
composite structures (mini-phrases, expressions) that get translated as a group. the same one may exist in both languages, but the meanings may not correspond (or they may only exist in one language)
what’s the difference?
Groupe syntaxique = a bunch of words that form a meaning together (unité de sens):
-la cellule d’un moine
Composé several words that form one term (specific, definite!):
une cellule de moine
at the end of the day
(s) à la fin de la journée
against the light
(s) à contre-jour
in mid -October
(c) à la mi-octobre
as the crow flies
(s) à vol d’oiseau
he is over-age
(s) il a dépassé l’âge
they changed their minds (s)
ils ont changé d’avis (c)
can a phrase be a ‘composé’ in one language and a ‘groupe syntaxique’ in the other?
