UNIT TWO: The Brain, Reflex Actions and Hormones Flashcards
What is the function of the Medulla?
Controls breathing and Heart rate.
What is the function of the Cerebellum?
Controls co-ordination
What is the function of the Cerebrum?
Enables conscious thought and memory.
What does the CNS stand for?
Central Nervous System
What is the CNS made of?
Brain and the spinal cord
What is the perpheral nervous system?
Nerves that come from the spine
What is the order for Gathering and Responding to Information?
Stimuli
Senses
Sensory Neuron
CNS
Motor Neuron
Effector
Response
Messages travel through the nerve cell in the form of..?
Electrical messages
What happens between the nerve cells?
There are small gaps between nerve cells where electricity cannot pass through
What is the chemical message called that is sent inbetween nerve cells?
Synapses
What is the Stimuli?
Something harmful to the body
What is the effector?
The muscle or gland receiving the message.
Examples of reflexes?
- Touching something hot then moving away
- Blinking due to dust
- Coughing due to particles blocking the airway
What is the order of a reflex arc?
Stimuli
Sense receptor
Sensory neuron
Inter neuron
Motor neuron
Effector
Response
Hormones are made of?
Proteins
Hormones are made in?
Endocrine Glands
What is the job of the reflex arc?
To protect the body from harm by releasing a rapid response.
What order are the neurons in a reflex arc?
Sensory
Inter
Motor
Hormones are what kind of shape?
Specific
Hormones match what?
The receptor
What happens when your blood glucose increases?
Pancreas detects change
Pancreas makes insulin
Insulin travels through the blood to the liver
Glucose turns to glycogen
Glycogen makes the blood glucose back to normal
What happens when your blood glucose decreases?
Pancreas detects change
Pancreas makes glucagon
Glucagon travels to the liver through the blood
Glucagon signals the liver to break down glycogen to glucose
This increase the amount of glucose in the blood so its back to normal
During emergency what is released?
Adrenalin
What does Adrenalin promote?
Breakdown of glycogen to glucose
