UNIT THREE: Pesticides and Biological control Flashcards
What is a pesticide?
A pesticide is a chemical used to remove and destroy pests of crop plants
Why would you use a pesticide?
Reduces competition and will increase crop yeild.
Types of pesticides?
Herbicides
Fungicides
Insecticide
Bactericides
What are Herbicides for?
Used to kill plants (weeds).
What are Fungicides for?
Used to kill fungal infections
What are Insecticides for?
Used to kill insects
Bactericides used for?
To kill bacterial infections
What is Bio-accumulation?
The build up of pesticides in the bodies of organisms over time.
What is Biological control?
Biological control is the alternative to pesticides, involves using one species to control the population of the pests.
What is a risk of biological control?
Leads to invasive species if the organism escapes.
What are GM crops?
Genetically modified crops have genes from other organisms to improve their characteristics.
eg, crops can have bacterial toxins in their stems to kill pests.
