UNIT TWO: Leaf structure Flashcards
What are the pores on the surface of leaves called?
Stomata
What do these pores allow in and out?
Carbon Dioxide and oxygen to enter/exit the leaf
They also allow water vapour to leave the leave via evaporation
What is the upper epidermis function?
Protection
What is the Palisade mesophyll’s function?
Main site of photosynthesis
What is the spongy mesophylls function?
Absorbs gases from photosynthesis
What is the Lower epidermis function?
Protection
What is the Guard cells function?
Controls the opening of the stomata
What is the function of the Xylem?
To transport water from the roots to all other areas of the plant
And to strengthen the stem of the plant
What does Phloem do?
Carries glucose made in the leaves during photosynthesis to other parts of the plant
What is Xylem?
A hollow tube of dead cells
What is Phloem?
Living cells
Water travels to the root by..?
Osmosis
What are some factors that increase transpiration?
-Low humidity (Very Dry)
-High Temperature
High wind speeds
What is used to measure the speed of transpiration?
Potometer
