Q

What is motor neuron degeneration?

A

Efferent AP fail to reach effector, due to motor neuron degeneration or loss of myelin on axons

Q

What are two cases of motor neuron degeneration?

A
  • Amyotropic lateral sclerosis (ALS)

- Multiple sclerosis (conduction failure)

Q

What is neuromuscular transmission failure?

A

Motor neuron action potential arrives at neuromuscular junction but fails to cause sufficient muscle excitation

6
Q

What is the difference between Myasthenia gravis and lambert eaton syndrome?

A

MG = body makes antibodies against Ach receptors -> Ach can’t open ligand-gated channels -> no muscle AP

LES = body produces antibodies against voltage-gated Ca+ channels -> can’t produce Ach -> no AP

Q

What 2 things does ACTX do?

A
  1. lengthens AP -> long plateau of depolarization

2. Causes spontaneous repetitive firing of AP w/ increasing frequency

Q

Take home message 1

A

Venom and toxins attack important proteins of NS

17
Q

Take home message 2

A

Over-activation of motor (efferent)nerves -> hyperactivity -> lots of neurotransmitters at the synapse -> life threatening effects
