unit 4 part 3 Flashcards
special specimen collection and handling
cold agglutinins
-antibodies often formed in repones to infection with mycoplasma pneumonia
-react with RBCs at temperatures below body temperature causing them to stick together
-must be kept warm during transport
-tube at 37 degree C and deliver to LAB asap to lab
agglutination
process of sticking together
Cyofribrinogen
-an abnormal type of fibrinogen
-precipitate when cold and redissolve when warmed
-warm collection and storage required
(same as cold agglutinin sample )
Cryoglobulin
-an abnormal serum protein
-precipitate when cold and redissolve when warmed
-warm collection and storage required
(same as cold agglutinin sample )
chilled specimens
-test that needs to be chilled after draw
-use to prevent chemical changes that would alter test results
specimens must be put in what ? (chilled)
put on a slurry ice
-homogeneous mixture of ice and water
-temp should be 1c to 5 c
-delivered to lab within 5 mins of collection
lactic acid
-collected w/o tournkit
-collected w/o pt. making a fist
both can raise lactic acid
test required chilled specimens
-acetone
- lactic acid=gray top-sodium fluoride on ice
-ammonia=lavender top-EDTA = ON ICE
-free fatty acids
-ABG arterisl blood gas
-ACE angiotensin-coverting enzyme
-ACTH adrenocortropic hormone
-Gluagon
-PTH parathyroid hormone
light sensitive specimens
-exposure to light can break down or alter certain blood constituents
-most be protected from light after collection
-wrap the tube in aluminum foil immediately after collection
an amber color tube can for dermal collection
blood and urine constituents that are light sensitive
-beta carotene
-bilirubin
-urine porphyrins
-urine porphobilinogens
-vit A -retinol
-vit C -Ascorbic acid
-vit B1-B2 -6
time sensitive specimens
-analytes are unstable or volatile
-test performed rapidly after specimen is taken
legal and forensic specimens
-blood specimens may be collected for use as evidence
-alcohol and drug testing
-DNA testing analysis aka paternity or parentage tetsing
-special handling and procedures
prevent tampering
misidentification
prevent interference with test results
COC CHAIN OF CUSTODY
-protocol that ensures that the specimen is always in the custody of a person legally entrusted to be in control of it
-special containers
-seals
-forms
-date,time,ID of the handler
blood smears
▪ Dermal puncture drop of blood onto a slide
▪ Microscopic examination of blood cells
▪ Differential Count
* proportion of the various blood cell types
* Counting reticulocytes
* Perform special staining procedures
malaria smear
▪ Blood-borne protozoa of the genus Plasmodium
▪ Fever and chills that coincide with life cycle of parasite in the bloodstream
▪ Diagnosed with blood smear
▪ 2 to 3 regular smears
▪ And 1 thick smear
▪ Allowed to dry for at least 2 hours
▪ Stained to reveal parasite
▪ STAT or timed before onset of fever or chills
