A

Pt tilt head back and mouth open
* Depress tongue , inspect back of throat with flashlight look for inflammation
* Touch tip of swab to tonsils, or inflamed area
* Do not touch cheeks, tongue prevent contamination
* Return swab to holder
* Crush the ampule at the bottom of holder containing the transport media
* Label and deliver to lab

nasopharyngeal specimens

A

Infectious organisms
▪ Diagnose whopping cough, croup, covid, flu, pneumonia, respiratory infections
▪ Use a cotton or Dacron-tipped sterile wire
▪ Passed through nostril to reach back of the nasopharynx
▪ Rotate gently to collect mucus specimen and then remove
▪ Swab placed in transport media and sent to lab

-eating 1 hour b4

pt. should rinse mouth water 10 b4 collection

placed in freezer immediately after collection stays frozen 4-6 hours
shipped to lab in frozen pack
