Preanalytical variables
occurs before analysis of the specimen
analytical variable
occurs during specimens analysis ,can be affected by preanalytical variables such as collection time or transport conditions
postanalytical variable

why are most routines for phlebotomy rounds in the morning

feel hard or cordlike and lack resiliency
caused by inflammation, disease, chemotherapy, prolonged iv therapy
hematomas
a reddened swollen area where blood collects under the skin
may be caused by the needle going through the vein or by failing to apply pressure after withdraw
edema
swelling that is caused when interstitial fluid is retained in the tissue
burns, scars, and tattoos
have impaired circulation, are susceptible to infection plus may be painful or difficult to penetrate and should be avoided
tattoos only if inflamed or infected
lymphostatis
caused by removal of lymph tissue on the side of the mastectomy
can you draw blood while an iv is in placed
use other arm w/o iv or from a distal site
best practice when there is an iv
ask nurse to turn off iv
wait 2 -3 mins
discard first 5ml
restart iv
enhance vein prominence
massage gently upward from wrist to the elbow
dangle arm ina downward position to increase blood
apply heat. moist heat should be avoided
rotate the wrist to increase the promince of the vein
collection using butterfly
assemble equipment
positions the pt.hand and apply the kit
insert the needle
collect the sample
finish collection
attend to the pt
disposed of the wis
