Unit 3 topic 4- social learning theory Flashcards
social learning theory
emphasizes that the way we learn is through observation and imitation of others
model
person who is observed, behavior can be imitated
Bandura, Ross, Ross (1961)
participants ranked on aggression tendencies on 3 levels.
step 1: exposed to model (adult) playing friendly/aggressively/not attending to Bobo doll
Step 2: participants left in room with 2 toys, not allowed to play with
Step 3: went into room with toys and bobo doll, were observed on how they acted to Bobo doll
Results Bandura, Ross, Ross (1961)
aggressive group modelled more aggressive tendencies than other groups. showed influence of adult model. Bandura argued cultural factors influence modelling behaviors.
attention
focusing mental energy on observed behavior. characteristics of model influence attention
retention
process of storing observed behavior in memory
reproduction
process of attempting to imitate observed behavior. success of imitation is based on capabilities of learner
reinforcement/motivation
desire to perform observed behavior. motivation created through reinforcement
vicarious reinforcement
observing someone else being rewarded for behavior
external reinforcement
direct reinforcement for imitation (i.e. getting money for impersonating someone)
self- reinforcement
meet certain standards set for ourselves by performing observed behaviors
modelling
person performs behavior that is seen by another person
vicarious conditioning
learner observes model being rewarded/punished for behavior
