Unit 3 topic 3- Memory Flashcards
what is memory?
Information processing system that encodes, stores and retains information.
Encoding
converting information into format that is useable by the memory system
Storage
retention of information over time
Retrieval
process of learning and recovering previously stored information using appropriate retrieval cues
Multi-store model of memory
describes memory as the interaction from sensory memory, short term and long term memory
memory capacity
amount of information that can be stored in the memory system
memory duration
time information lasts in storage of memory
Sensory memory
initial entry point of memory. if attended to it will be encoded to short term memory. Each sense has its own sensory memory
Iconic Memory
for sense of sight, has unlimited storage but only 0.3 second duration
Echoic memory
for sense of hearing, unlimited storage, 3-4 second duration
Short term memory
consciously manipulating information from sensory and long term memory. can hold 5-9 bits of information and 12-30 second duration
Long Term memory
permanent storage for information encoded from experience. unlimited storage and duration
