unit 3 topic 4- operant conditioning Flashcards
operant conditioning
type of conditioning where learning comes from the consequences of behavior
3 elements of operant conditioning
Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence
Antecedent
stimuli or event that occurs before behavior, indicating occasion for particular behavior
Behavior
behavior is action that is learned
Consequence
stimulus that is applied after behavior. can take form of reinforcement or punisher
reinforcement
desirable consequence that increases frequency or probability of behavior occurring
positive reinforcement
pleasant stimulus strengthens behavior that occurred before it (i.e. getting A’s)
negative reinforcement
removal of unpleasant stimuli that strengthens behavior that occurred before it (i.e. using umbrella to avoid the rain)
Positive punishment
addition of unpleasant stimuli that weakens behavior
negative punishment
removal of pleasant stimuli that weakens behavior
Acquisition
process of associating antecedent, behavior and consequence
extinction
weakening of response through continual non-reinforcement
spontaneous recovery
reappearance of extinct response in the presence of antecedent
stimulus generalisation
behavior is demonstrated to similar stimuli to antecedent
stimulus discrimination
behavior is not demonstrated to another similar antecedent
