Unit 3 topic 2- Psychological effects on visual perception Flashcards
Gestalt principles
Visual perceptual principles that guide organization and interpretation of stimuli. the whole image causes meaningfulness
- Figure ground principle
organising part of stimuli that is attended to away from background
- closure
tendency to complete an incomplete stimuli and perceive it as a whole
- similarity
tendency to mentally group objects that are closely positioned together.
- proximity
tendency to mentally group objects that are positioned together
Depth perception
ability to interpret the world as 3D
Binocular depth cues
depth cues that rely on information from both eyes
Retinal Disparity
binocular depth cue where cortex uses left and right eye to form complete image
Convergence
binocular depth cue where cortex uses information about amount of tension placed on orbital muscles to help indicate distance of object from observer. closer object is more tension
monocular depth cues
cue to assist perception of depth that only requires information from one eye (mono)
pictorial depth cues
cues indicating images distance
- linear perspective
apparent convergence of parallel lines as they recede into the distance
- relative size
objects cast a larger retinal image when closer to observer than when further away
- interposition
when one object obscures vision of another object. object obscured is further distance away from observer.
- texture gradient
objects are closer if they have greater detail than those further away
