Unit 3 topic 3- levels of processing models of memory Flashcards
levels of processing models of memory
conceptualisation of memory as a single system where degree of depth is based on degree to which memory can be recalled
quantitative nature of encoding
type, level, depth of processing that infromation
Structural processing
processed in terms of physical features (shallow depth)
Phonemic processing
process in terms of sound characteristics (moderate depth)
semantic processing
processed in terms of meaning and relationships to concepts pre-existing in long term (strong depth)
Evidence- Craik and Tulving (1975)
participants asked questions and used different types of processing
Evaluation (strengths and limitations)
empirical evidence and practical, however concept of depth is hard to define and does not explain why one process is better than the other
